Not every product launch needs a perfume-counter box. Plenty of UK brands need small retail packaging that protects the product, carries the brand and ships without drama – gift boxes and sleeves included. Premium finishes still matter when the occasion calls for them. The useful skill is knowing which board and which finish earn their place on your brief.
AB Print Group’s packaging printing service covers both ends of that spectrum from the Batley plant: folding cartons and retail packs, gift and presentation boxes, sleeves, POS and high-end brand work. This article frames the choice for small retail and launch packs first, with premium as a deliberate option rather than the default opening line.
Think folding cartons, gift boxes, sleeves, product-launch packs, POS promotions and the smaller presentation formats that sit on shelf or in a bag. Live applications on our packaging page also include exhibition cubes, suggestion and prize boxes, business card boxes and charity clothing bins – useful when a retail campaign shares kit with a show or fundraising moment.
If your brief is “get this SKU shelf-ready for a regional launch,” you are in retail-pack territory even if the brand itself feels premium.
Live materials language on the page covers three workhorses:
You do not need to name the mill grade in your first email. You do need to say how the pack will be filled, stacked, posted or handed over the counter. That drives whether a light folding carton is enough or whether paper-over-board presentation is worth the step up.
Foil blocking and embossing are available in-house on our packaging service. They are not compulsory for every retail carton.
Consider them when:
Skip or simplify them when the job is a short-run launch sleeve, a promotional carton that must stay cost-disciplined, or a POS piece that will live for a few weeks rather than a gift season. In-house finishing still helps either way – you are not forcing a separate supplier into the critical path – but the brief should say whether foil or emboss is required or optional.
Card fabrication is part of the live offer. Dummies, mock-ups and CAD let you check fit, openability and shelf presence before you commit a full run. That matters especially for:
Bring a filled product sample or accurate outer dimensions to the conversation. Ask for a dummy when structure is new; ask for CAD when you need a digital cutting path for prototypes or short runs.
Both sit on the packaging page. In plain terms:
Many retail briefs start on CAD for the first packs, then move to a die when the structure stops changing. You do not need to decide alone – describe quantity bands and how often the pack might revise, and the plant can steer.
High-end brand packaging for perfumes, spirits and similar categories remains part of what we produce. Treat it as a lane you choose when the product story needs it: heavier presentation, magnetic seals, richer board, foil and emboss working together.
For most small retail and launch briefs, lead with board choice, structure and print clarity first. Add premium finishes where they change how the customer values the unboxing – not because every packaging page on the internet leads with luxury language.
If you are briefing folding cartons, gift boxes, sleeves or a short-run launch pack, start on our packaging printing page, then get in touch, email hello@abprintgroup.com or call 01924 473481. Share board preferences if you have them, or send the product and we can talk through dummy and CAD options before volume.
